Diving in Mexico - it's interesting and exciting

Diving in Mexican Riviera Maya from Cancun to Tulum is very diverse and interesting. There is a lot to see here, and you will probably wish to come back to Mexico again and again. It’s physically impossible to visit all places of interest during one trip. For recreational divers, diving can be divided to three categories:

1. Diving on reefs near the mainland Riviera Maya, which can be done at the cities of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum. Our dive center offers diving in all these places. In Cancun there is the famous underwater museum (Musa), in Puerto Morelos there is the sunken ship Cadete Juan Escutia; Playa Del Carmen is famous for diving with bull sharks, and Puerto Aventuras and Tulum for its beautiful reef that stretches along Riviera Maya all the way down to Guatemala, it is about 800 km in length, and can be compared only with the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

2. Diving in Cozumel island. Cozumel is the largest island in Mexico. Jacques Yves Cousteau explored the beauty of the underwater world of these places in the early 60s of the last century and claimed Cozumel one of the best places in the world for diving! He made more than one film about the beauty of these places. They are full of marine life, and diving here is much more interesting than at the coastal, mainland part. Due to the fact that the reef turns into a wall, there is a choice of depths, the blue and almost always a moderate or strong current. Here you can find eagle-rays, nurse sharks, reef sharks, lobsters, barracudas, groupers and many other underwater inhabitants.

3. Diving in cenotes is a cherry on sundae for trip to Mexico. This kind of diving you can try only in Mexico, and it will blow your mind away. Incredible beauty! Game of light, stalactites and stalagmites, layers of fresh and salt water create incredible visual effects. The entire Yucatan peninsula is the former bottom of the world ocean. According to one of the versions, after meteorite fall 64 million years ago, it ascended above sea level and created a land. Then, rains and groundwater washed out spaces in soft limestone, forming grottoes, tunnels and caves. Cenotes came out as a result of the collapse of the ground. They are formed by rock collapsed under its own weight, creating access to the underground cavity (cave). The Mayans considered cenotes a sacred place, gateways to the realm of dead. In total, in Yucatan there are about 8000 cenotes.

The minimum certification level for recreational diving in the Mexican Cenotes is OWD and above.

If you already have diving certificate and choose our dive center for your underwater adventures in Mexico - you made the right choice, and we assure you will be satisfied with professional level, safety standards, interesting programs, modern equipment, flexible pricing and personal approach to every guest.

We form groups not more than 4 divers per guide in cenotes and no more than 6 divers in the sea. The groups are guided by experienced instructors - dive center staff, who will not only make your dive safe and interesting, but also provide comprehensive information about the objects and subjects of the underwater world.

We go diving on various dive sites, depending on your preferences, from Cancun to Tulum, including Cozumel island. However, you always need to remember that the final choice of a dive site is always done in the morning and depends on the weather conditions.

Diving for certified divers on the reefs of Playa del Carmen

Only in 5-7 minutes away by speed boat you will find the reef which is area of habitant for numerousamounts of marine animals. 6 to 40 meters (20-130 feet) deep many small and medium sized fish can be seen (box fish, parrot fish, barracuda, angelfish, etc.). The highlights of the site are stingrays, nurse sharks, turtles, moray eels and octopuses.

Night diving on the reef in Playa Del Carmen or Puerto Aventuras

Diving after sunset gives you a unique opportunity to enjoy the side of underwater life hidden from daily eyes. All underwater creatures, that were active during the day, go to sleep, and the nocturnal ones get active. At night, you have a great chance to see different fish, crabs, lobsters, squids and cuttlefishes in the active phase of their life. And even become a witness of hunting instincts demonstratedby predatory fish. For example lionfish or moray eel.

Reef Diving in Cozumel Island

Cozumel islandis located 20 kilometers away of Playa del Carmen coast. You can reach it either by comfortable ferry or dive speed boat. Getting there takes approximately 45 minutes.

The remote location in the open ocean is compensated by greater diversity of marine life of the reef, interesting coral formations (walls, arches, plateaus), big variety of depth for diving and currents of different strength. Also, on the reefs of Cozumel there’s more possibility to see eagle rays and nurse sharks.

2 boat dives on the reefs of Cozumel 155USD (the ferry ticket is not included in the price 450 pesos)

2 boat dives on the reefs of Cozumel 205 USD (transfer by speedboat is included)

This short video will give you an idea about diving in the Caribbean. All filming were made on the reefs near Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel. Enjoy watching.

Cave diving in Mexico

Mexico is a paradise for cave divers. The total length of cave systems in the Yucatan Peninsula is estimated by some experts at about 3000 km. The second largest in the world, cave system Sac Actun is located right here and is 318 km long. The cave system Ox-Bel-Xa, the second by length in Mexico, includes about 140 cenotes and has about 265 km of surveyed passages. The deepest explored cave in Mexico is called the Pit, depth reached is 119 m, and the cave is a part of 82 km long Dos Ojos cave system,it is connected by a dry passage with the Sac Actun system.

Cave systems and cenotes continue to be explored and mapped even nowadays. Expeditions are being organized, and new artifacts are being found, but most of the cenotes are located in impenetrable jungle where there are no roads, and getting there is possible only by foot with a machete to make a path. All this requires great effort, considerable financial investments and great enthusiasm.

If you are a certified cave diver, we can organize cave diving in the caves of Mexico by standard routes. Also, you can apply and take part in a real research expedition!

Latest cave diving news from Mexico (January 2018).

The research team # grupodeexploración and #grandmayaaquifer managed to connect the two largest underwater cave systems in the world, known as Sac Actun and Dos Ojos in Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico. That makes Sac Actun system the largest in the world. About 347 km of connected tunnels, galleries and passages. Before, the longest underwater cave system in the world was the Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, U.S.A.

Bullshark diving in Playa del Carmen

The bull sharks seasonlasts from November to April. For Advanced Open Water Divers and above we offer an exclusive dive with bull sharks, which will be an unforgettable experience. At 24 meters (80 feet) deep you can face one of the most dangerous inhabitants of the ocean - bull shark. Certain species can grow up to three meters (10 feet) and have the strongest jaws among their fellows.

The reef off the coast of Playa Del Carmen from November to April becomes a unique place in the world, where female bull sharks bare their offspring. In calm, shallow, warm water, sharks lose their aggressiveness and prepare for childbirth. This circumstance makes dangerous predators peaceful and calm, which guarantees no risk for divers and gives a unique opportunity to observesafely one of the most dangerous predators of the planet in their natural habitat at a distance of a few meters.
